The
Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, is one of the six Institutes of
Technology created as centres of excellence for higher training, research,
and development in science, engineering and technology in India. Established
as College of Engineering in 1961, the institute was later declared an
institution of national importance under the "Institutes of Technology
(Amendment) Act, 1963" and was renamed "Indian Institute of Technology,
Delhi". It has been accorded the status of a deemed university with powers
to decide its own academic policy, to conduct its own examinations, and
to award its own degrees.
 The
institute has established academic and research collaboration with various
institutions and universities in the UK, USA, France, Japan, Germany, and
Russia. The institute has also established academic and research collaborations
with several important institutions and universities abroad. These include
Tokyo Institutes of Technology, Ohio State University, New Jersey Institute
of Technology, Concordia University, INSA Lyon (France), University of
Massachusetts, Benha Institute of Technology (Egypt), University of Aden,
Tribhuvan University (Nepal).The Distributed Information Sub-Centre (DISC)
at the Indian Institute of Technology was established in 1989 as one of
the DISCs by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, under
its nationwide networking of biotechnology centres. It provides an integrated
information source and serves as a platform for sharing the resources,
databases and expertise available at different national and international
centres of research. The centre specialises at providing total computer
support in the area of MODELLING AND SIMULATION activities in Biochemical
Engineering and Biotechnology. The centre is well equipped with the facilities
in terms of hardware, software, etc. The centre has recently acquired INTERNET
connectivity and facilitating softwares for better information retrieval
and dissemination. |

| In the eight years of its existence, the centre has developed many databases in the critical areas of biochemical engineering and biotechnology. These database include CHROMATO - a bibliographic database on chromatography, MONOCON - a database on monitoring and control of bioreactors, database on simulation studies (SIMU), WASTE - a bibliographic database on industrial waste disposal, ANIMAL - a database on recent publication in the field of animal cell culture and METHOD - a database on protocol of analysis procedures in biochemical engineering and biotechnology. | |

The centre has also organised several workshops and hands-on-training programmes for the benefit of users. The centre has acquired some training software packages for the teaching of basic fundamentals of biochemicals engineering. These are routinely available for the users of the centre. Apart from this some custom made softwares have also been developed for smoothing of the experimental data, statistical analysis and modelling simulation and optimisation of the bioprocesses.
